Nothing but the truth (2008)

Nothing but the Truth is a drama film. The inspiration for the screenplay was the case of journalist Judith Miller, who in July 2005 was jailed for contempt of court for refusing to testify before a federal grand jury investigating a leak naming Valerie Plame as a covert CIA operative, but this was merely a starting point for what is primarily a fictional story.

In Washington, D.C., a female reporter faces a possible jail sentence for outing a CIA agent and refusing to reveal her source. Rachel Armstrong (Kate Beckinsale) is an ambitious reporter for the Capital Sun-Times. When she discovers fellow soccer mom Erica Van Doren (Vera Farmiga) is working as a covert operative for the CIA and recently returned from Venezuela, where she was investigating an assassination attempt on the President of the United States, she confronts her and requests confirmation. Erica refuses to cooperate, but Rachel has no doubts about the veracity of the report, and her story becomes front-page news with the support of editor Bonnie Benjamin (Angela Bassett) and Avril Aaronson (Noah Wyle), who serves as the newspaper's legal counselor.

Because revealing a covert operative's identity is a treasonous offence and because the individual who leaked the information to Rachel is a potential threat to national security, special Federal prosecutor Patton Dubois (Matt Dillon) convenes a grand jury and demands to know who her source is, information she refuses to divulge. High profile attorney Albert Burnside (Alan Alda), hired by the newspaper to defend Rachel, is certain his personal friendship with Judge Hall will facilitate matters and is shocked when his client is jailed for contempt of court.

ארני צ'יימברס, חבר לשעבר במשך 37 שנים בבית המחוקקים של מדינת נברסקה, הגיש ב-2007 תביעה נגד אלוהים וביקש כי הנתבע יוצא להורג על ידי זריקת רעל. לטענתו, אלוהים אשם בפעילות טרור משום שהוא מפיץ "אימת מוות והרס בקרב מיליונים מתושבי כדור הארץ". בית המשפט של נברסקה ביטל את התביעה, בטענה כי לא ניתן לזמן את הנתבע לדיון היות שכתובת המגורים שלו אינה נמצאת ברישומים.

Without Her Consent is a 1990 television film. Originally airing on NBC, the drama film is based on a true story and stars Melissa Gilbert as a woman who seeks justice after being raped by an acquaintance. When she moves from Idaho to Venice, Los Angeles because of a new job offer, Emily Briggs (Gilbert) quickly meets Jason Barnes (Valentine), a friendly neighbor who works as a set decorator for movies. He invites her to his home in Santa Monica to pick up an old table which she can use at her new place, though abuses the meeting to rape her. Emily unsuccessfully struggles to get away, and fears for her life throughout the rape. Her cousin Marty (Bernard) insists for her to report the case, but the District Attorney denies the case because she voluntarily went to his house, and there were no witnesses present. The fact that he was arrested five times before with the same allegations does not influence the case. Emily tries to move on with her life, but finds out that she is not able to share intimacy with her boyfriend Trey Cousins (Tubb).

Sometime later, Emily receives a visit from a woman named Marcia Daily (Riker), who tells her that she was raped by Jason as well, and that all of the women were stalked by him afterwards as a way of power control. Marcia tells her that an attorney named Gloria Allred (Neuwirth) can make a case of the rape if they combine powers, but Emily is reluctant to go to court. Emily later admits to being raped to Trey, when he overhears her conversation with Marcia. Trey is upset that she went to a stranger's house and estranges from her by claiming that she was asking for the rape. He tries to avoid doing harm to Jason out of anger, but eventually runs him over with his car. Aware that her fiancé is facing a prison sentence, Emily turns to Gloria for help. Gloria agrees to take on his case, and takes Emily's rape story to the media in hopes of influencing the jury. Trey is reluctant to allow Emily's rape to become a national sensation, but the story is printed anyway on Emily's insistence.

In court, Trey is sentenced to 36 months of probation, as well as getting a restraining order against Jason's residence and having to pay for his medical expenses. He is too overwhelmed with the case and its media attention, and Emily leaves him when he admits that he is too distressed with his own problems to support her with recovering from the rape. Meanwhile, a young woman named Claire Sugarman (McCullough) steps forward to being raped by Jason as well, which enables Gloria to make a case. Emily is reluctant to go court yet again, until she grows determined to prove to everyone that she was not lying about being raped. Trey visits her in hopes of a reconciliation, but Emily tells him that she honestly does not think that he believes that she was raped.

During the trial against Jason, Emily is being battered while on the stand on being promiscuous. Their attorney hopes to break Jason by confronting him of having lied to the police about knowing Emily, though Jason lies himself out of the situation, endangering the case for Emily. Trey, convinced of regaining Emily's affection, sets out for himself to prove that Jason is guilty, and meets with Jason's neighbor Pete Raymond (Hobbs), who can serve as a witness. Emily is touched by Trey's actions, especially due to the fact that he ignored his restraining order in her sake. After Pete tells in court that Emily left his place shocked and battered, in torn clothes, Jason breaks and admits to the crime. He is sentenced to 10 years in jail, and Emily now reconciled with Trey, receives $5 million for damage repairs.

מדובר בסרט (ובספר) המבוססים על סיפורה האמיתי של סוראיה מנוצ'הרי שהתרחש באיראן. בעלה של סוראיה, המתאווה לקחת תחתיה נערה בת 14, מעליל עליה כי נאפה וזקני הכפר בראשות המולא (כהן דת) דנים אותה לסקילה על רקע פגיעה בכבוד המשפחה. סצינת הסקילה קשה מנשוא (למרות שמותנה לעומת הזוועה שהתרחשה במציאות). אביה ואף ילדיה של סוראיה מיידים בה את האבנים הראשונות ושאר אנשי הכפר המשולהבים, חבריה משכבר הימים, מצטרפים בטירוף חושים.
מכירים את ההרגשה הזו? של תסכול מהול בחוסר אונים, לנוכח מעשי נבלה (במציאות או על המרקע)? האגרופים נקפצים והנשימה כבדה?
בלילה התקשתי להרדם. חשבתי על סוריאה. ועל חיות האדם הללו, המאבדים כל צלם אנוש, אם בכלל התברכו בכזה. (כן, כן. אני יודעת שמיד יקומו מליצי היושר של ההולכים על ארבע ויהדפו את הדימוי הפוגעני). חיות אדם שרעבונם לדם לא יידע שובע לעולם. מוחם מוכה ג'יהאד והם פועלים בכפייתיות, כנרקומנים, להסניף את ליטרת הדם. דם, דם ועוד דם.
ומה עלינו ללמוד ובעיקר להפנים מכך?
הסכסוך הפאן ערבי – ישראלי/ ציוני/ יהודי אינו פתיר. ככל שנקדים להפנים את המשוואה המצערת, ניטיב להיערך בהתאם. המחלוקת אינה על "גבולות" אלא על עצם נוכחותנו, כאן, בחלקת האלוהים הקטנה שלנו. והערבים לא ישלימו, לעולם ובשום תנאי, עם נוכחות כזו. אין בהם חמלה. הם לא חומלים על אמא שלהם, אח והבן והבת שלהם.. .טובחים ורוצחים גם אותם-אז מובן שאין בהם שום חמלה על יהודי - אלא ההיפך. המצווה הכי משובחת לרצוח יהודי "ומזכה" באורגיה של 72 בתולות.

ברור שזה הנאציזם החדש - ישן עלי אדמות. יש למנוע את השואה הזאת מעלינו על ההנהגה הישראלית להפנים ולקבל את העובדה הזאת ולהפסיק לוותר על שטחים תמורת "שלום" או כל מחווה נחמדה אחרת ופשוט נעמוד על קיומנו כאן ללא ויתורים וללא אפשרות "לעקם את ידינו". האזרח הקטן יכול להבין שאין רצון משום צד לשלום, לא שקיימת אפשרות... וההנהגה שלנו עדיין מנסה לשכנע את עצמה ואת העולם שאולי יום אחד...
גורלה של סוראיה האומללה הוא קדימון (פרומו) לעומת מה שצפוי לנו במקרה והערבים יממשו, חלילה וחס את חלומם/ סיוטינו. והאמינו לי, הם לא יתנו בנו סימנים: דתיים, חילוניים, ימנים או שמאלנים. העולם יעמוד מנגד, ינוד בצער ויחייך אל תוך זקנו, שטופח במצוות חוקי ה"שריעה" (חוק דת האסלאם).
